1912 Barber Half While the Merlin probe didn't help me find this 1912 Barber Half (found today, my first half ever!!!!!),it did help me find a 1904 Indian Head. Thanks for the good advice, Gary! As for how I found the 1912 Barber, I was granted permission to detect at my vet's home in Pine Bush, my vet told me that the original house was built around the 1860's and as you can imagine I leapt at the chance! Once I got there I decided to work the side of the house were a huge old tree dominated the landscape, no grass grew under or around the tree and the ground was compact and hard like clay. After finding a few wheat cents and some newer clad coins, my XLT rang out with a loud good half/dollar signal at only about 1.5 inches down. I might add that in my 3 years of detecting, I have gotten numerous signals such as this only to be disappointed by trash. Something told me though DIG THIS TARGET. Now there was no grass here so I got out my hand trowel and slowly dug around the area I had pinpointed, as I picked up chunks of dirt I saw a silver edged disc sticking out. I sat there for a moment not sure what to do next! I reached in and brought the coin out, seeing the size of the coin and turning it over, reading the words HALF DOLLAR, I was stunned!!!! My first half, absolutely amazing! Now I KNOW why I love this hobby so much! Thanks again, David Adams
